Surrounded by de Pic du Midi de Bigorre (2877 m) in the north and the Pic d'Espade (2467 m) in the south, the Col du Tourmalet is the highest mountain pass in the Pyrenees, culminating at an altitude of 2115 m.

It's a passage of historical interest between the Gave de Pau valley and the Campan valley. The etymology of the name Tourmalet is double: the one being "bad detour", the other "distant mountain". It's up to you – cycling mountain dwellers - to decide which interpretation you will give!!!
